How long does this engagement need to stay coherent?
Short, one-week assessment with a single deliverable meeting? A deck might be fine.
Six-month discovery feeding a multi-phase implementation with rotating team members? Slides will collapse under their own weight.
Who needs to use the output?
If the only audience is a steering committee who wants a 30-minute presentation, decks are the right format for that moment. But that's delivery format, not working artifact.
If the output needs to inform architects, developers, project managers, and QA, each needing different views of the same underlying decisions, slides force everyone to reverse-engineer structure from prose.
What happens after discovery ends?
Decks get filed. They become historical documents that no one updates.

When Decks Still Make Sense

Treating the deck as the deliverable, not the knowledge
Teams spend hours formatting slides instead of structuring data. The deck looks polished, but the underlying thinking is trapped in prose that can't be queried, filtered, or connected.
Assuming handoff is a one-time event
Discovery doesn't end at a presentation. Questions come up during implementation. New stakeholders join. Scope changes. If the only artifact is a static deck, every question requires someone to remember context that was never captured.
Building the deck first, then trying to extract structure
